Overview
For this step of our project, most of the work builds off of the previous step. We did a lot of revising of our previous work, with the guidance of our mentors, we learned some new modeling techniques, and started working to solidify our designs for our product.
Major Steps:
- Alternative Concepts
- Functional Decomposition/Classifications Scheme
- Major Revisions
- Sketching Tutorials
- Final Product Design

Sketching Tutorials
For this step, we were required to learn about sketching. This allowed us to learn how to sketch our own designs and model them on paper. All drawings and notes are on display on a different page. This link is down below.
Alternative Concepts
This is the Alternative Concepts brainstorm. The top site shows our brainstorm Padlet. Here we brainstormed different design ideas for our habitat. After running the survey, we had decided on four designs, highlighted in yellow at the top. The second site shows our Coggle map, which shows different concepts that we felt were necessary for our habitat. These concepts were also decided based on our survey. These are concepts that we need to take into consideration when designing our habitat.
Functional Decomposition/ Classification Scheme
For this, we worked on incorporating our previously brainstormed concepts into a coherent design. In our first take, we sectioned off different concepts from our Coggle Map, and assigned different features based on four designs from our Customer Survey. After combining optimal and similar concepts, we decided on three different designs; dome on cylinder, underground dome, and double domes. Next, for our final take, we researched and refined some of our concepts, which led to more refined designs. We also created sketches for our concepts, which allowed display our design visually. For our last Classification Scheme, we mapped out our best concepts and finalize on a design concept after doing some analysis. Though the analysis will be on the next step, we decided on our double dome design.

Final Thoughts
Overall, this step focused on finalizing a design. I think that we have a good grip on what features we need to take into consideration and what type of habitat we want to construct. Our next steps are to analyze our final designs and then to do deeper research into some of the materials of our habitat. We also need to look into our product's life cycle and environmental and economical impact.
